Work has been demanding and we've been planning a vacation. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I finally got some time behind the sewing machine and made a couple coloring bags for a friend's boys. The idea is that you stick your crayons in the front pockets and store your coloring books in the bag. But really, you can put whatever you want in them. Knowing the two boys that will be receiving these bags, I'm guessing they'll carry rocks and trains at some point. </div>

Never mind the Cat in the Hat's hand sticking out of bag #2. </div>

I admit, I'm excited. Mr. S is amazingly good at gift giving. It's never about price, he's just so dang thoughtful. That's why I chose him to be my baby daddy...15 years ago. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Last year, he got up with E and then my two guys brought me breakfast in bed, followed by flowers, followed by gifts. It was really over the top and totally unnecessary, but I really appreciated the effort, especially for my first Mother's Day. </div>
<div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My mom has always insisted on no gifts for any holiday from us kids. I disobeyed her for a long time but several years ago, I threatened her with homemade gifts. She called my bluff so I made her a scrapbook of my brother's and sister's USAF Basic Training photos. She loved it. </div>
<div>
<div>
<br /><div>
So, now I'm on the homemade gift train and I can't get off. Each year, I'm scrambling for ideas of new things to make (psst... sometimes I cheat and buy her something awesome on Etsy, but I fess up that I didn't make it.)</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
For Mother's Day this year, I got my inspiration from these<a href="http://www.bowerpowerblog.com/2013/02/fabric-flower-tutorial/" target="_blank"> fabric flowers at Bower Power</a> and these <a href="http://papernstitchblog.com/2011/12/14/diy-felt-flowers-five-ways/" target="_blank">felt flowers at Paper & Stitch</a>.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I found the vase at Target for $12 and used some purple and yellow fabric and white and yellow felt that I already had. Using their tutorials, I lost 7 fingerprints from hot glue burns but ended up with a fabulous bouquet of flowers to send to my mom. I made it several weeks ago and have had it sitting around our kitchen since. I was pretty sad to box it up and ship it off yesterday. I think I need to make another one for myself. </div>

And, bonus!, I sewed them myself. Of course pillows are easy, but I'm still pretty proud of myself. I mean, I sewed several straight lines! These pillow cases are envelope style. Maybe one day I'll be skilled enough to sew a zipper.<br />
<br />
I currently have four pillows on the couch. I can't decide if they should be two of each pattern, four different patterns, two of one pattern and one each of two other patterns, or what. (Was that confusing?) So, for now, I have two of each.<br />
<br />
For the record, the two smaller pillow covers-- teal with dandelions, were purchased on Etsy for $20ish each. I paid less than $20 for the two yards of fabric for the two bigger pillow covers that I sewed myself. So, boom. DIY savings.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHVnZ1EgnxpZbtpafrp2rXwNRKuwUpAd5KO0x0u4P4x7gPe81KwJQpOE-ozNluGO9T2ct_22ves1K6UZaI2ojPkS1jwFovQq-SxkOcgc5qx_7fdvLolWeRjk4R1BmoJBfAX8ArRjW6eVBF/s1600/IMGP3307.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHVnZ1EgnxpZbtpafrp2rXwNRKuwUpAd5KO0x0u4P4x7gPe81KwJQpOE-ozNluGO9T2ct_22ves1K6UZaI2ojPkS1jwFovQq-SxkOcgc5qx_7fdvLolWeRjk4R1BmoJBfAX8ArRjW6eVBF/s640/IMGP3307.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And here's the whole living room view. Up next, I'll be turning some drawers into shelves. That's a much larger project and might take a very long time to happen. Also, now that I look at the room, I'm thinking some kind of valance and curtains may be in order. I loooove those blinds, but I'm not realizing that they're pretty cold. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Yes, that's a wagon. And yes, it's a pretty boring room. Remember, I have a two year old. All the tchotchkes have been removed for child proofing purposes. Even our lovely coffee table has been relocated to the other side of the room so E doesn't gouge an eye out on the corner. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I hope we'll be able to have a normal house again someday. Maybe in, what, 16 or so years?Bonniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09914285079726705880noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4291895755487851671.post-63989242118609935702013-04-25T22:06:00.000-04:002013-04-25T22:06:47.226-04:00Fabric Wrapped Lamp ShadeI'm working on adding some accents and patterns to my living room now that we got some new furniture. I'm in love with blues, greens and yellows. First up, the lamp.<br />
<br />
We've had an Ikea lamp shade on this Target lamp for a very long time. Except, the lamp is made to attach at the top and the shade is made to attach around the light bulb. So really, the shade is just ever-so-carefully balanced on the lamp.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiz54wRZFnzMmj35MH7FlbmiHumZk43axgk5Pts9IOjKJcY2Lcup1JJeHC8w9XSvnaCOY-oCEqBhOVQ-x4K8uFE8vM3o3RCKlM4x17dPr_9zVsR6U8lF1J0sKDq0mh5rPht0HM7bU1D2Pdb/s1600/IMGP3244.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiz54wRZFnzMmj35MH7FlbmiHumZk43axgk5Pts9IOjKJcY2Lcup1JJeHC8w9XSvnaCOY-oCEqBhOVQ-x4K8uFE8vM3o3RCKlM4x17dPr_9zVsR6U8lF1J0sKDq0mh5rPht0HM7bU1D2Pdb/s640/IMGP3244.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Time to un-ghetto-ify the lamp!<br />
<br />
I started with a $20 plain white shade that's shorter/fatter than the Ikea shade. In the picture, it seems very similar but the simple fact that the new lamp shade actually attaches to the lamp is the biggest difference here.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN2Bw756Pzfvu1uUkmtMoQykzq-kpPeXRvF8BvwDoWXrxhCk0nCHVIfGGlTilcmDCIYyJWJdJp6pdd0tAFyDhNx7xlcNZnVIKf9HV_bGcYpfu6SttwPu05ju2ic4MDNvFOs4N6N39r3I0O/s1600/IMGP3246.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN2Bw756Pzfvu1uUkmtMoQykzq-kpPeXRvF8BvwDoWXrxhCk0nCHVIfGGlTilcmDCIYyJWJdJp6pdd0tAFyDhNx7xlcNZnVIKf9HV_bGcYpfu6SttwPu05ju2ic4MDNvFOs4N6N39r3I0O/s640/IMGP3246.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Time to get super technical. Not.<br />
<br />
To cut the fabric, I laid it on the floor and then cut about an inch from the top and bottom as I rolled it along. I did a little adjusting to get the pattern right. Still, it's a little better looking from the front than from the back, which is fine for its location.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirl7bQvQslOC8H6-SQdqALveK0xNm9O-iB4JYCiFdOAGeRem-5jMtQh5lKwMTh1n9ug8C7uUH5UFbpDr-pn68xpqzPptyuU1_nUq7i2vVPVZ9H-9ncPalsR4IbnRqKrfIYzj5kP2nxXTZ5/s1600/IMGP3295.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirl7bQvQslOC8H6-SQdqALveK0xNm9O-iB4JYCiFdOAGeRem-5jMtQh5lKwMTh1n9ug8C7uUH5UFbpDr-pn68xpqzPptyuU1_nUq7i2vVPVZ9H-9ncPalsR4IbnRqKrfIYzj5kP2nxXTZ5/s640/IMGP3295.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I used spray adhesive, following the temporary bond instructions to lightly attach it. A bead of hot glue along the seam makes it look nice and neat. I also used hot glue along the top and bottom and folded the excess to the inside.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I like it. A lot. I might paint the lamp base white but I'm going to live with the black for a while before I made that decision.<br />
<br />
Note, I'm still trying to figure out what to do with that room divider that's propped up behind the lamp. It was in the opposite corner of the room, but the new sectional fills up that corner now. I still love the fabric so I might wrap some canvas with it or maybe frame it in a big white frame.<br />
<br />
What are you fabric wrapping lately?Bonniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09914285079726705880noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4291895755487851671.post-8704001515713060612013-04-24T19:53:00.000-04:002013-04-24T19:53:00.101-04:00A Latch Board for EWhen I saw this <a href="http://www.younghouselove.com/2013/01/last-minute-latch/" target="_blank">latch board on Young House Love</a>, I knew I had to make one for E. I forgot about it for a while, but when I found myself browsing through Home Depot, I remembered the plan.<br />
<br />
I bought my supplies from memory, but I realize now that I made mine quite a bit bigger. My gadgets are more spread out. I got a 2ftx2ft square of plywood for about $6. Each latch/gadget was a couple bucks each. Along with latches, I have a zipper since E has recently gotten the hang of unzipping his jacket. I also have two tap lights, three casters and one of those boing-y door stopper things.<br />
<br />
I don't have the luxury of a playroom so I had to make it pretty enough to keep in the living room. I prettified it with some teal spray paint, then I added stickers, scrapbook paper bunting, some washi tape and Mod Podged the whole thing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaPe2aXC7Y8M7M1NAUX4KxIHaRngsscgeKUj9gy9oVkkF9XU9Cp4dNm2FdOZhsY8c_VtxPqkQaXygwyXphEQg_qHvY24mQ_JXp7_ASG14MIYOUEtLGmTpWyDzzs8cRJLjBe-BePqzqp6xx/s1600/IMGP3302.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="420" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaPe2aXC7Y8M7M1NAUX4KxIHaRngsscgeKUj9gy9oVkkF9XU9Cp4dNm2FdOZhsY8c_VtxPqkQaXygwyXphEQg_qHvY24mQ_JXp7_ASG14MIYOUEtLGmTpWyDzzs8cRJLjBe-BePqzqp6xx/s640/IMGP3302.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
He likes it a lot-- especially the door stopper and the lights. It took him about 2 minutes to figure out that the tap lights would come off if he twists them (that's how you change the batteries.) I think he's over the novelty of removing the lights though, so we might be in the clear on that one. It's pretty likely that he's going to rip the zipper off because it's attached with hot glue. You can even see it gaping in the picture below. I'll probably need to fix it up a bit-- the lights and the zipper, but for now it's proving to be quite fun.<br />

In honor of that, I'm going to tell <i>The Story of Lars</i>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2TdS8EYLA3UYjvcoIwGoLFnlEPdT1TvqlyYCtFonaOrP5Wf2VxD_H8WXt2aGuGYQ2xe8Zq15ymihMNo0KPig1dy0a6HzQRO7RXrBUjW4G_TcAm_14OTgFbxB2M4roC0BlflBnipjZBh4F/s1600/12Feb10.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="442" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2TdS8EYLA3UYjvcoIwGoLFnlEPdT1TvqlyYCtFonaOrP5Wf2VxD_H8WXt2aGuGYQ2xe8Zq15ymihMNo0KPig1dy0a6HzQRO7RXrBUjW4G_TcAm_14OTgFbxB2M4roC0BlflBnipjZBh4F/s640/12Feb10.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
When I was in high school we had a fabulous orange male cat named Bailey. We were best buds. Sadly, Bailey started spraying and my mom took him and his friend-cat, Jasmine, "away". I don't know what that means, and I never want to. It was a very sad day. Mr. S and I had just started dating and he had to watch me sob at the kitchen table as my mom packed Bailey and Jasmine into the car. Saddest. Day. Ever. (To my 17 year old self, anyway.)<br />
<br />
On that day, I swore that when I left home and got a place of my own, I was getting an orange cat. I lived in the dorms my freshman and sophomore year of college so a cat was out of the question. I got my first apartment during the summer between my sophomore and junior year of college.<br />
<br />
I went to school in South Carolina and Mr. S went to school in West Virginia. During that summer, the summer of 2000, he joined me for the summer. Within a few days of him moving in, we took a trip to the Horry County, SC Humane Society. We saw a litter of super tiny kittens, a few of them orange. They were too young to adopt at that time but I knew those were the ones and I planned on returning in a couple weeks when they were older.<br />
<br />
A few weeks later, we were back at the shelter. I picked out a 6 week old orange male. It was hard to say at that time if he would be long or short hair. I was really hoping for a short hair. The poor kitty was black with fleas but most flea medications were for older cats. I could not allow those fleas in my apartment so I took my chances and gave little kitty several flea baths. Interesting fact-- since those early days, I've never treated Lars for fleas even though he often goes outside into our backyard now. He's never had a single flea. I swear those early flea baths made him flea proof!<br />
<br />
Mr. S and I debated for a long time over what his name would be. We settled on Lars, after<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lars_Ulrich" target="_blank"> Lars Ulrich</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2DsLYdjuMKS58xxYRUYTEI9mOdURM9yBe5LFAxVuqL2QHCa1p4k6ubTnxGGaFwnBbL8YHLa7bXeyf2TdwVBhlRSZDMwUZmGagts4ly54aB09MiR3ySQXHocoC29-CVAPAV3QCIySlifU4/s1600/10Feb10.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2DsLYdjuMKS58xxYRUYTEI9mOdURM9yBe5LFAxVuqL2QHCa1p4k6ubTnxGGaFwnBbL8YHLa7bXeyf2TdwVBhlRSZDMwUZmGagts4ly54aB09MiR3ySQXHocoC29-CVAPAV3QCIySlifU4/s640/10Feb10.JPG" width="412" /></a></div>
<br />
After Mr. S returned to WV, I got a new roommate, Kelly. Kelly and Lars had a love-hate relationship. No, that's a lie. They had a hate relationship. Kelly was dog person. Lars was a mean cat. He would unroll entire rolls of toilet paper throughout the apartment while we were sleeping. He would get on the counters and knock glasses off onto the tile floor just to hear them shatter...almost always in the middle of the night to give us heart attacks. He would run out the door any chance he got. I'm surprised Kelly didn't just let him go if I wasn't home. He would steal food off our plates if we ate at the coffee table and he'd knock over glasses just to watch the liquid spill.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqAPzvTknDdV48Yh8cho7ZMQyOBEL4fJEc_7jjvHB_1v3Lp0EIoSCclE8XZVlViKz9n9dRNoTfBDbz_4zMKWLCg964x38ML9LE2d7Gfh5iqecNNSL_S6HF0LWISksNa2VfdCrqPTMP4ZmT/s1600/17Jan10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqAPzvTknDdV48Yh8cho7ZMQyOBEL4fJEc_7jjvHB_1v3Lp0EIoSCclE8XZVlViKz9n9dRNoTfBDbz_4zMKWLCg964x38ML9LE2d7Gfh5iqecNNSL_S6HF0LWISksNa2VfdCrqPTMP4ZmT/s640/17Jan10.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
He made it through a year and a half with Kelly and after I graduated college, we moved back to WV into a very small one bedroom apartment with Mr. S. We lived there for about 6 months and strangely, I can't even remember Lars living there.<br />
<br />
His next move was to Ohio. We lived in a very luxurious apartment when we first moved to Ohio. He had a huge walk-in closet as his room (compared to cramped closets in previous apartments.) Interestingly, I can't remember him living in that apartment either except for the big closet.<br />
<br />
The year and a half that I lived in those last two apartments was a very awkward time in my life. It was the "why do I have a bachelors degree and no job? why am I living somewhere landlocked when my degree is in marine science?" period of my life.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiOU35IUzZECF8hm1IXE3b-8wH2x_EtTWeFk6dJFDmVyLkbauJAHM6PSsbUStA2huyPUQg9TPyKUGJpj_HWrEVSY9i2qXmH0CTsyGBlp2dlf2dLD7Lsznsis9FX51aW8jYVUNG7Qnyqr_j/s1600/3Oct10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="462" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiOU35IUzZECF8hm1IXE3b-8wH2x_EtTWeFk6dJFDmVyLkbauJAHM6PSsbUStA2huyPUQg9TPyKUGJpj_HWrEVSY9i2qXmH0CTsyGBlp2dlf2dLD7Lsznsis9FX51aW8jYVUNG7Qnyqr_j/s640/3Oct10.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
When we moved into our current house in 2003, Lars, of course, came with us. In the three bedroom house, he got a whole room to himself. How glorious! He was always known as the mean cat. Several of our friends still think that he's mean even though he's mellowed out immensely over the years.<br />
<br />
When we brought Laika home in 2009, Lars was beside himself. It wasn't long before he realized that he had the advantage, though. Laika is kinda dumb. It's definitely a Garfield & Odie situation around here. A few hisses and swats was all it took for Lars to get his confidence back.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
When E arrived, he was nervous but interested. Although he's known as the "mean cat", he's been nothing but tolerant of E. He's nervous enough that we never had to worry about the cat "stealing the breath" from the baby. And if it's a good day, he'll even let E hug him now that he's older.<br />

I get sad with every passing day knowing that one day he'll be gone. He can't jump onto the counters (a good thing) or the window sills (a bad thing, for him) anymore. He sometimes misses when he tries to jump onto our bed. But at the same time, give him a catnip toy and he'll play just like he did 13 years ago.<br />
<br />
He's been a wonderful companion for 13 years.<br />

I don't call it <i>spring</i> cleaning though; I call it quarterly cleaning. There are very few things that I only do once a year. All of my spring cleaning tasks are also done in the fall, at least, if not more often.<br />
<br />
To me, a big part of my quarterly cleaning is organizing. I like to take a look at things around the house and do a little purging-- either to Goodwill or the trash or make some moolah by selling stuff.<br />
<br />
Here's the plight of a working mom... I have to take two days (I could honestly use a whole week) of leave to get my spring cleaning done. It can't be done in the evenings. It can't be done on the weekends. That's my family time and I'm willing to spend some of it doing weekly chores, but not big tasks like steam cleaning the carpets.<br />
<br />
I have a crazy-long to-do list in a list app on my phone. I organize it by room or mark "all" for things that happen in every room, like cleaning windows/blinds. Here's a sneak peak.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPmB9EFxgNxznpVXMSHj_CBwoRV8ZwGVcT801V9Di8E0E8CaKzrAHHlq6-mdEXpUFuLnVHFj2tK2_URn-ErBCdDYqvhrh2AaCzeOGPn-M_QSgLv44Y0d64K0iBajVxK_XW_8LXDAxubR5O/s1600/photo+1.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPmB9EFxgNxznpVXMSHj_CBwoRV8ZwGVcT801V9Di8E0E8CaKzrAHHlq6-mdEXpUFuLnVHFj2tK2_URn-ErBCdDYqvhrh2AaCzeOGPn-M_QSgLv44Y0d64K0iBajVxK_XW_8LXDAxubR5O/s400/photo+1.PNG" width="225" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiB8Y4KPkaLBKM1D12dKVC_c79BKc78W29fxMxs9VaSdiq7GkFWYvIbaixDrMyatZH56LirPhNN0_7gQwwmilDhqWka544gFxxsdRapUilo7y3D654AGQEI9g3FI9QJBywb_dV6Ft5PqS6b/s1600/photo+2.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiB8Y4KPkaLBKM1D12dKVC_c79BKc78W29fxMxs9VaSdiq7GkFWYvIbaixDrMyatZH56LirPhNN0_7gQwwmilDhqWka544gFxxsdRapUilo7y3D654AGQEI9g3FI9QJBywb_dV6Ft5PqS6b/s400/photo+2.PNG" width="225" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I think that list would take 5 screen captures to show you the whole thing. Yes, I'm pathetic. Only a small fraction of it will get done during my 2-day quarterly cleaning. I'll work on the smaller tasks on evenings/weekends and some things will still be on the next quarterly cleaning list.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After day one: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul>
<li><strike>Steam clean the carpets (living room, hallway, two bedrooms)</strike></li>
<li><strike>Dust walls, baseboards, corners</strike></li>
<li><strike>Magic Erase kitchen tile floors</strike></li>
<li><strike>Clean all cabinet fronts</strike></li>
</ul>
<br />
Keep in mind that I only have from when Mr. S and E leave for work/daycare until they get home. And if I'm taking days off work, I need a little me-time. I'll enjoy my coffee in the morning, watch some trash TV while eating lunch, and yesterday, I spent the better part of the afternoon shopping for baskets for a better toy solution in the living room. So, it's not <i>all</i> work, but pretty dang close.<br />
<br />
It's day two and the race is on. Today, I don't have big tasks, like steam cleaning, on the list. It's mostly 10-30 minute tasks so hopefully I can knock out a bunch of them. Happy spring cleaning!Bonniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09914285079726705880noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4291895755487851671.post-32666919406998790682013-04-09T22:12:00.000-04:002013-04-09T22:12:48.867-04:00Easter Egg Dyed Clothes PinsHave you noticed how everyone is doing things with clothes pins? It's like the clothes pin has made a comeback. People are Mod Podging them, Washi taping them, sticking magnets to them for the fridge, hanging bunting by them, and the list goes on and on. Honestly, I'm pretty psyched about it. I love things that clip. I have big plans to Washi tape some clothes pins and then put magnets on the back of them to use for clipping things to the fridge.<br />
<br />
For now, though, I ran across <a href="http://motheringinashoe.blogspot.com/2011/05/dyed-clothes-pins.html" target="_blank">this fun way to dye them</a> with Easter egg dye (I think I've also seen Rit dye versions.) After <strike>Mr. S, E and</strike> I dyed Easter eggs, I plopped two clothes pins in each cup of dye. I don't have a purpose for the clothes pins yet, so I kept the quantity low.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnLP4RHf0CFMZrga9AvRILxM2PjxzbuS_Xsc1tHjJgRIiiRbWjieCU4nHrYb-XDCdognMvnwUx32PILWlcKERjqASU2dKNiVFw8J-9OtSFW_9PpAcU6O3kouMkRIQHh29uhs57M23-Ldgy/s1600/IMGP3111.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="278" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnLP4RHf0CFMZrga9AvRILxM2PjxzbuS_Xsc1tHjJgRIiiRbWjieCU4nHrYb-XDCdognMvnwUx32PILWlcKERjqASU2dKNiVFw8J-9OtSFW_9PpAcU6O3kouMkRIQHh29uhs57M23-Ldgy/s640/IMGP3111.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I left them sit for a long time. I wasn't paying much attention, but probably a whole naptime-- 2 hours. Surprisingly, they turned out great. The colors are super vibrant, unlike the eggs that were dyed in that same dye. And now, I have a cupful of colorful clothes pins! I'm glad that I bought one extra box of egg dye just in case it worked out and I wanted to do more later.<br />

It's my favorite time of year. Time to start thinking about all the fun things I'll plant in my garden. I went to Meijer earlier in the week and saw that they have all of their plant stands set up out front and even had some of the early plants out already. It was exhilarating just to see!<br />
<br />
I have a 5x5 square foot garden. (One day soon, I'll share how I built it.) That's 25 squares to plant in. My garden has been in various states of goodness over the past few years. With being 100 months pregnant and then having a baby in July of 2011, it was pretty crappy that year. Last year, I had good intentions but... eh. It didn't happen.<br />
<br />
I'm excited to have an excellent garden again this year. I'm especially excited because E can help. Maybe not help "good", but help nonetheless. And, he can eat my goods.<br />
<br />
I've learned quite a few things over the years. The top 10...<br />
<br />
1.) I can grow sugar snap peas like a pro. I hate sugar snap peas.<br />
2.) Tomatoes take up a lot of room. Consider using more than one square per tomato plant. Also, build cool tomato teepees.<br />
3.) Cucumbers may be AWESOME or TERRIBLE depending on the cucumber beetles. Consider some sort of trellis structure to grow them on too.<br />
4.) Green bell peppers are only "eh" so grow something more interesting.<br />
5.) Jalapenos may take a while to come in, but once they do, I'll have a ton.<br />
6.) No bean has ever tasted as wonderful as a green bean fresh from the garden.<br />
7.) I'm great at growing herbs in the garden. Not so much in individual pots.<br />
8.) I desperately want to grow strawberries. My neighborhood squirrels desperately want to eat my strawberries.<br />
9.) Broccoli from the garden is delish, but I must start it early. Heat will destroy it.<br />
10.) Marigolds for bugs. Tums for rotting on the vine tomatoes. Chili powder for squirrels (sorta).<br />
<br />
So, here's the 100% for sure plan. All the empty spaces are up for grabs, except for maybe around the tomatoes.<br />

The doc said I had a virus. I think it was more like the flu. I've never had a virus knock me off my feet like that and for 5 full days. Anywho... <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Before the sickness, I made a spring wreath. My inspiration came from <a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/121737996149667487/" target="_blank">this one that I pinned</a>. (The pin goes to a site that's not in English.)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It took me forever to take the plunge on this one. That fake fur stuff is pricey and it seemed like it would take a lot. When I saw it on sale at JoAnn's, I knew it was time. I got two balls of it for $2.99 each. Still not cheap, but better than full price which is double that. I used an 8 inch green foam wreath. The green wreath helps hide any spaces in the fur. The spool of flower "ribbon" was quite pricey, but I didn't use much of it so it'll be good for many future projects. Overall, this wasn't a cheap project, but I love it so much. So, here ya go...</div>

<div>
It's bright, springy, happy. It makes me smile every time I pull in the driveway. Also, I got to use the fun trick of using a Command hook on the top inside of the door to hang it. I'll never go back to those dumb wreath hangers! </div>

It's been a crazy week. E and I have both been extremely under the weather. I've been out of work for three full days and two half days in the past 6 work days. Not good.<br />
<br />
Last weekend, before we were all on our death beds, I got into some crafts. Mr. S got me a huge vase of lilies for our anniversary. They were beautiful but I was left with yet another plain vase to deal with. I have been seeing tons of twine wrapped things, including some vases that were mega pricey.<br />
<br />
So... free vase + a $10 ball of chunky twine that I only used half of + some yarn that I already had + a lot of hot glue...<br />
<br />

I made these for my friend's 5 and 4 year old.<br />

This is an improvement just because I can sew a little better. Plus, I actually measured this one so it holds an 8-pack of crayons. These crayons, by the way, are not the ones I gave Cameron. These are just a terrible baby-chewed collection that I was able to find around the house.Bonniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09914285079726705880noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4291895755487851671.post-67665978300608620322013-03-19T20:54:00.000-04:002013-03-19T20:54:53.976-04:00Bird FeedersI had a busy crafty weekend. I have lots of fun things to share. Up first are these bird feeders that I 100% copy-catted from <a href="http://eighteen25.blogspot.com/2011/08/bird-feeders.html" target="_blank">eighteen25</a>. I even loved their stars so much that I made stars too.<br />
<br />
The recipe was easy peasy-- bird seed and gelatin.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIKXaW2wL9i24oE2PevipuD3IZoxjXiPov9I1FOMl-7eX260DZyGsj6ydfaJEPUu75zoCtLqxZRkI5EX6pJxE7YNIFYBdX7mX_Wd_-wB_TQ1idwBQZ7ZFtSWBjMyQ5ekCdRxLtmyCxEa3v/s1600/IMGP3052.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="425" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIKXaW2wL9i24oE2PevipuD3IZoxjXiPov9I1FOMl-7eX260DZyGsj6ydfaJEPUu75zoCtLqxZRkI5EX6pJxE7YNIFYBdX7mX_Wd_-wB_TQ1idwBQZ7ZFtSWBjMyQ5ekCdRxLtmyCxEa3v/s640/IMGP3052.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The mixture was crazy-sticky so you should take that into consideration if you're making these with kids. There's no way I would've let 19 month old E put his hands on this.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgalhwa0HfhV62uNZyuHNgp8UKtHCTMpzCapgVp8o8tEiQTwNY6wbmk80xkLjizyMWIdYN8076WItu5mHaJD9N9WBJns2NiIUpvsnZWfinMPYhe9EMV67EpBu-6ehsgJMS1W9TTadto-q1W/s1600/IMGP3053.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgalhwa0HfhV62uNZyuHNgp8UKtHCTMpzCapgVp8o8tEiQTwNY6wbmk80xkLjizyMWIdYN8076WItu5mHaJD9N9WBJns2NiIUpvsnZWfinMPYhe9EMV67EpBu-6ehsgJMS1W9TTadto-q1W/s640/IMGP3053.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The recipe, which is for one envelope of gelatin and 3/4 cup bird seed, only made three stars.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhk1YevpxbbtulNnWcJnriEgFFeyPurCvN7GRzS4vDNtuenBu_2X291-G3wrVlTC4BSKoTTlbGOSPk-3xcdVnwPXUp_m_mtSNm2HqgjNZcmQwy51DcqGPn0rX7J8Ar92bBJZa28090ulzG4/s1600/IMGP3056.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhk1YevpxbbtulNnWcJnriEgFFeyPurCvN7GRzS4vDNtuenBu_2X291-G3wrVlTC4BSKoTTlbGOSPk-3xcdVnwPXUp_m_mtSNm2HqgjNZcmQwy51DcqGPn0rX7J8Ar92bBJZa28090ulzG4/s640/IMGP3056.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I hung one on the very dead bush right outside the front door. E and Laika like to sit at the front door and watch traffic, birds, squirrels and people/dogs walking by. So, I hoped this might help attract some extra wildlife. It almost blends in. I'm not sure the birds know it's there.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmLBfmnd4phb0pVsQbPeIaOfOSj00LK2_xi1AZhT8oe5c91Y4r6iS3cX80fW7hb13CiRxc5NmZLxbBeX2OMhUTtiedV3mTRDaHX1LfJMZIItGr3QzKuUHbAdnfFAdHJGON238xceGWK1DA/s1600/IMGP3070.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmLBfmnd4phb0pVsQbPeIaOfOSj00LK2_xi1AZhT8oe5c91Y4r6iS3cX80fW7hb13CiRxc5NmZLxbBeX2OMhUTtiedV3mTRDaHX1LfJMZIItGr3QzKuUHbAdnfFAdHJGON238xceGWK1DA/s640/IMGP3070.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The other two are in a tree just outside the dining room window, where E sits for meals.<br />

Or should I say, the other two<i> were</i> in that tree. See that gray sky? It turned into rain the next day and these two washed out of the tree. The one in the front is still hanging around... possibly because it's actually <i>not</i> hanging, but more like laying in the branches. I have yet to see any birds. I'll make some more once the rainy season is over.Bonniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09914285079726705880noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4291895755487851671.post-54475921414571269432013-03-14T21:47:00.000-04:002013-03-14T21:48:37.531-04:00IKEA Spice Rack ShelfHave you seen these on Pinterest? It seems like a lot of people use them as kid book shelves. That was my original plan when I bought four of them. However, before they got mounted in E's room, I decided that I needed some in my office. They're perfect for all my little crafty things.<br />
<br />
The big plastic container is some kind of sewing container. Or, at least that's where I found it-- with the sewing stuff. The three Erlenmeyer flasks were a donation from a science teacher friend, and the jar full of washi tape was originally a jar of dried chipped beef.<br />

Last summer, a very good friend had her third kiddo. Along with a big ol' lasagna for the family, I made a super special package for the two older kids.<br />
<br />
First, they each got a picture book and some crayons. Inside each one, it says "Draw a picture of..." and there's a noun at the bottom of each page... Mommy, Daddy, New Baby... cat, dog, airplane...<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Next, I picked up some fabric markers and plain white onesies. I included the directions: "Make a onesie for Baby Jacob."<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
And last, a bunch of outside stuff-- glow-in-the-dark stuff, silly string and bubbles. My directions, "Play outside." What that really means? "Get out of Mommy's hair for a bit, mmkay?" :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj60eSQ5SmIHFsblE7G_t8Ozv89z-S-BH-7oQuzW1x5BJTM2KrQax6rAJhRkKsdveJdaPUUja8L961UGF5LnDokmHRQ6Y5zvfRJcyKg9zwayfPUQdbh9ZJL49aKDRpZ_55_Tq2rVaoXzsI/s1600/IMGP0379.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj60eSQ5SmIHFsblE7G_t8Ozv89z-S-BH-7oQuzW1x5BJTM2KrQax6rAJhRkKsdveJdaPUUja8L961UGF5LnDokmHRQ6Y5zvfRJcyKg9zwayfPUQdbh9ZJL49aKDRpZ_55_Tq2rVaoXzsI/s640/IMGP0379.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>

Specifically, I *heart* taking pictures of flowers, bugs and nature in general. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I also, however, have gigabytes and gigabytes of pictures and they're <i>so disorganized</i>. I have five folders named New Folder(x). I have From Camera, From Phone, From iPhone, From Nikon, etc., which are basically huge photo drops that could be duplicates but my phone or SD card was full and I needed it so I'd just dump them all. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
They need sorted in a major way. Really, 95% of them need deleted. I'm frozen with not knowing where to start. Do I organize them by subject? By date taken? By....? </div>

Mr. S and I read the manual and threaded that sucka up. I sewed some really bad lines and then decided to give something useful a try. Enter the crayon roll. I've seen plenty of them on Etsy. Seemed easy enough.<br />
<br />
Sewing requires some thinking. How do you need to fold things? Do you sew outside in or inside out? So after a little thinking, I figured it out. And here you have it. It's not perfect by any means. I still need to figure out a few things. Still, I love it. I'm going to toss it in my purse so I have crayons for E anytime we're out. Yay!<br />

This is why you should try to capture kids acting naturally and should <i>never</i> tell them to smile.<br />

They took about 15 minutes to make and they're so cute. <div>

<div>
It's pretty obvious, but the supplies are: blank craft cards, a Thank You stamp w/ blue ink, colorful bakers twine, some scrapbook flowers and a couple matching brads (is that what they're called?). </div>

I'm not one to dream up things on my own, so I'm sure I saw it somewhere.<br />
<br />
Back in November/December, I became obsessed with making some fun bunting for E's room. I got felt in bright colors that go with his room colors and got started. It was easy, but it took me a couple weekends of sewing here and there.<br />
<br />
Each triangle in the bunting is half of a 9"x11" sheet of felt. I cut them in half long ways and then folded that in half and cut them into triangles. Something like this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqZ0883hL6rDwJBxXAyr5eY9eZgg2J0oTLxZFZILbwnYW53sDCFXl5wCdbL0y9z7-0sofF9qxakZctwKA2Ox8ltWsCqiMuAnFxjJdmoPHnpO2hkSOR7K2xb4KzZX4qtJgDw2SXIJJoHWvo/s1600/IMGP2017.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqZ0883hL6rDwJBxXAyr5eY9eZgg2J0oTLxZFZILbwnYW53sDCFXl5wCdbL0y9z7-0sofF9qxakZctwKA2Ox8ltWsCqiMuAnFxjJdmoPHnpO2hkSOR7K2xb4KzZX4qtJgDw2SXIJJoHWvo/s640/IMGP2017.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Instead of using matching thread (embroidery floss), I decided to use contrasting colors.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrN51Aj8YDnVuT3D_RMjs0E7m36wDX46k27ZHOacN-lV0Fm1J8eQwgq18FjoPbG798eVoMxNsSeFIgROPHUfiKAKvZxkauyIdKtT-aXa6ZviX7d5UPJl-wU2Z-Y2ijFk9h8n3ZF-v_B8km/s1600/IMGP2020.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrN51Aj8YDnVuT3D_RMjs0E7m36wDX46k27ZHOacN-lV0Fm1J8eQwgq18FjoPbG798eVoMxNsSeFIgROPHUfiKAKvZxkauyIdKtT-aXa6ZviX7d5UPJl-wU2Z-Y2ijFk9h8n3ZF-v_B8km/s640/IMGP2020.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I did what I so technically call the outside stitch. I know that's not what it's called. What the heck is the name for it? Who cares? I left a little pocket at the top of each triangle and then strung them all on some teal yarn. I hung it with a couple small nails. It was hung with three different types of Command hooks but each one fell after some amount of time. So, alas, I had to make holes in the wall.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAYvJq6xjDbWUVsz8FPMoYiT6AVuIXu5Uz3_dW3LQgfkko36OOhFJAlqGDVVXqfWkmqRo3yD97b5uQzqyhXAlOc07nvkMWgWNm8jXBDRs-Mj6pHoZqFr66tZBQXgj-pg3Rkx78k5Ypp4tW/s1600/IMGP2030.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAYvJq6xjDbWUVsz8FPMoYiT6AVuIXu5Uz3_dW3LQgfkko36OOhFJAlqGDVVXqfWkmqRo3yD97b5uQzqyhXAlOc07nvkMWgWNm8jXBDRs-Mj6pHoZqFr66tZBQXgj-pg3Rkx78k5Ypp4tW/s640/IMGP2030.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love that it make's E's room look like a party. I love all the bright colors in his room. It makes me smile every time I'm in there. One day, I'll write about those super awesome stripes on the wall (that I painted while Mr. S was away on a business trip and I was uber prego) and the scrapbook paper Mod Podge'd name above the closet. </div>

<br />
Our 10 year wedding anniversary is this weekend and we're the "I can't wait to give this to you!" type when it comes to presents so we exchanged a couple days ago. Mr. S got me a sewing machine!<br />
<br />
One of my goals for the year is to a.) learn to sew and b.) sew E's receiving blankets into a quilt for his big boy bed (when the time comes... oh, I'm tearing up just thinking about him in a big boy bed.) That might be ambitious to accomplish in 10 months. I don't know. I've sewn before, but it's been a really long time and I never really did it enough to get good at it. It'll be an adventure, that's for sure.<br />
<br />
The sewing machine is super fancy and I'm not familiar enough to even thread it so it's sitting in the box until I can redeem my free lessons/tutorial/orientation/whatever... which isn't until the 16th. Eek! I'm so excited to get started. I don't know how I'm going to last until the 16th.<br />
<br />
So now, I have a new addiction-- pinning quilts on Pinterest. Wanna follow? Here's my <a href="http://pinterest.com/bonnie526/quilts/" target="_blank">quilt board</a>.<br />
<br />
In the meantime, maybe I should make it my goal to finish a scrapbook. For example, E's first year... which is 7 months past due. I don't know though... finishing one project before starting another? That just sounds like crazy talk!<br />
<br />
What projects do you have waiting to get started? What long term projects are still waiting to be finished?<br />
<br />
Is the sewing machine the traditional 10 year anniversary gift? Maybe the modern version? Haha... yeah, I doubt it.<br />
<br />
<br />Bonniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09914285079726705880noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4291895755487851671.post-73931926294069528232013-02-26T20:43:00.003-05:002013-02-27T10:46:00.305-05:00TP Roll ArtYou know you've hit a crafting rock bottom when you start doing toilet paper crafts. Don't get me wrong, <i>some</i> of the TP stuff on Pinterest is really cool. Regardless of their cool factor, there will always be a certain ick factor about toilet paper roll crafts... to me, at least.<br />
<br />
I've been struggling with what to put on my living room walls for... years? I had lots of things up, then we repainted and nothing went back on the walls. I keep thinking I want to make something, but can't decide what. I'm seriously in decision paralysis... for years!<br />
<br />
When I saw these adorable <a href="http://creativecarmella.blogspot.com/2012/07/toilet-paper-roll-paintinga-diy-project.html" target="_blank">picture frames by Creative Carmella </a>on Pinterest, I got inspired. I don't want the picture aspect of it, but I love the funky circles. So, I ran with them and added a little ombre. It's the new hotness. Everyone loves ombre, right? Ombre and chevrons-- they're the king and queen of crafts right now.<br />
<br />
Anyway, still pretty unsure how this would all turn out, I didn't want to spend much. I got a 16"x20" canvas for less than $4 at Hobby Lobby and used some acrylic paints that I already had around. I painted the canvas white. (It was already white, but I wanted to make sure it was as white as it could be.) Then I started with my circles.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1MKGj6oBUzeLzuPmplV-Wq7W5BFqLxeACNGBEOoQeRgitA11JxJvPXa1r_UcoXnEba4JIXChiQn6HVVyjaTANqectWnc9pMFiIoGMS96NcGZAMeBU5UABzUhsKMXKxUTkTCgsTgAmoi6b/s1600/IMGP2862.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1MKGj6oBUzeLzuPmplV-Wq7W5BFqLxeACNGBEOoQeRgitA11JxJvPXa1r_UcoXnEba4JIXChiQn6HVVyjaTANqectWnc9pMFiIoGMS96NcGZAMeBU5UABzUhsKMXKxUTkTCgsTgAmoi6b/s640/IMGP2862.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">My Tools (ew)</td></tr></tbody></table>After some TP roll diameter measuring (1.75", fyi) and some math, I decided to use three colors. I made three rows of just blue paint (I'm pretty sure the color was True Blue). Then, I added some white paint until I got a medium blue and made three rows of that. Then I added even more white paint to get a light blue and finished with three more rows.<br />
<br />
Close up, I think it's cool. The ombre effect is very subtle, which was not what I was going for but it takes a heck of a lot of white paint to lighten that blue at all! And, of course, I didn't realize that until it was way too late.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzzPJnNEEkCNtpQufInUB6LkV_KdR8T0DyGKAY1V6j0jFFHbBLFDW-AOjcCXp4nJVHaL6zTwBQ6PqebiiGqBb_5bNSLyLEd1YiFgqOOFmsWE7OES8_PIjuqtde5-vEYHxGZjEgFAZ9iPsP/s1600/IMGP2864.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzzPJnNEEkCNtpQufInUB6LkV_KdR8T0DyGKAY1V6j0jFFHbBLFDW-AOjcCXp4nJVHaL6zTwBQ6PqebiiGqBb_5bNSLyLEd1YiFgqOOFmsWE7OES8_PIjuqtde5-vEYHxGZjEgFAZ9iPsP/s640/IMGP2864.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Do you see the ombre? Sad, sad ombre.</td></tr></tbody></table>I put it in the coveted between-the-front-door-and-picture-window position. I don't love it. It's not interesting enough from a distance. I love, love, love bright white on my dark gray walls but the white of the door and the super bright white of the window is just too much on either side of it.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAEUwAHoKUe7W3zyhUTlV1g9rRAb-ziwt4Nmdga7JzZSTePavMBCxwz1a17dy_F0rQ2lbu3R3UvoLYLRpJpjbP8kA44NzibzLwmUlN7TP5zHAz-2SqOighx4DVXRAXsyVeNLuTQpfr1SR5/s1600/IMGP2866.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="422" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAEUwAHoKUe7W3zyhUTlV1g9rRAb-ziwt4Nmdga7JzZSTePavMBCxwz1a17dy_F0rQ2lbu3R3UvoLYLRpJpjbP8kA44NzibzLwmUlN7TP5zHAz-2SqOighx4DVXRAXsyVeNLuTQpfr1SR5/s640/IMGP2866.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Kinda hypnotizing, yes? <br />
(Ignore the Command hook peeping out the top-- my temporary hanging solution until I make up my mind.)</td></tr></tbody></table><br />
Maybe I'll downgrade it to the hallway-between-the-bathroom-and-master-bedroom position. Or maybe I'll trash it because it cost less than $5 total. Maybe I'll donate it to Goodwill and someone will think they're getting a masterpiece...and they won't know it was painted with toilet paper rolls! Yep, you know it! A very much ongoing project that may just go on forever. I made E a felt board. I bought the biggest (cheap) canvas I could fine at Hobby Lobby, which happened to be 30"x40" and was $16 after my 40% coupon. I cut and hand sewed a grassy hill (green felt) onto a blue sky (blue felt) and then stretched and stapled the whole thing to the canvas. Tada! Felt board. That part was easy, albeit a bit time consuming. That part is also done.<br />
<br />
It's all the "game pieces", if you will, that might keep me cutting and sewing felt for the rest of my days. I've been finding inspiration everywhere to make little scenes for E to play with. As soon as I made the first couple pieces, I let him have access to the board. I admit, I typically wait until I'm completely finished with a project before letting destroy...er... play with it. So, it was hard to hand over.<br />
<br />
For the past couple weeks, he'd wake up in the morning or from a nap and discover what new pieces are on the board. I'm sure I'll revisit this post many times, but here's what I have so far.<br />
<br />
The full scene (minus the third piece of road, which has already disappeared):<br />

The house (I need to make at least one more), with an apple and lemon tree, and a pond with ducks and a frog next to a coniferous forest of three. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
And here's a close-up of that pond. It's really my favorite part. Well, it might be a tie between the pond and the rain cloud.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS4DZ1510AFyedyW2oassDxeqiDrfn8ImDkAPPuVZN-mjwXftGUTY1G12Kf8Xg65AqCdygm6V404y_uSgtUxobg6o1RNKaJWmpu_CyaeABlXRFQPZRQq2K1bygR5ndXvm2rYiBYAz9p-Wc/s1600/IMGP2878.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS4DZ1510AFyedyW2oassDxeqiDrfn8ImDkAPPuVZN-mjwXftGUTY1G12Kf8Xg65AqCdygm6V404y_uSgtUxobg6o1RNKaJWmpu_CyaeABlXRFQPZRQq2K1bygR5ndXvm2rYiBYAz9p-Wc/s640/IMGP2878.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you've never experienced one of these boards, it all works by friction. Nothing is stuck all that well but it stays in place well enough for imagination time. In fact, because nothing sticks that well, a good slap to the canvas knocks most of it off. I decided it would be HI-larious to bang on the canvas and yell "EARTHQUAKE!" after E had set everything up. He did not think it was funny. In fact, he cried. Maybe he's not the little destroyer I think he is. </div>
<br />
<u>On my near future to-do list: </u><br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>One more house</li>
<li>More animals/dinos</li>
<li>People</li>
<li>A rocketship</li>
<li>A bus</li>
<li>Couple cars/trucks</li>
<li>Another piece of road</li>
<li>A rainbow</li>
<li>Lightning? </li>
<li>More clouds</li>
</ul>

The frigid temps have me wanting some yummy hot chocolate.<br />
<br />
Oh, who am I kidding? Breathing makes me want some yummy hot chocolate.<br />
<br />
I could make this<a href="http://honeyandfitz.blogspot.com/2011/12/polar-express-hot-chocolate-recipe-aka.html#axzz1h37WLMI5" target="_blank"> Polar Express Hot Chocolate</a> but I'm missing about half of the ingredients. And, there's no way I'm going out in the cold to get them. And, it's probably not advisable (diet-wise, at least) to be drinking sweetened condensed milk on a Thursday night. And, this recipe makes 10+cups and I don't feel like doing the math to shrink it... and I definitely don't need to be drinking 10 cups of hot chocolate tonight.<br />
<br />
So, here it is... some Swiss Miss and marshmallows from a bag. It's not glamorous, but it'll do the trick. And maybe one day, I'll have a reason to make 10 cups of hot chocolate.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Last Friday was slow so I was doing a little tidying up to get ready for the move. Stashed way under my desk, I found a long mailing tube that someone had sent to me. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I immediately flashed back to this list of the <a href="http://www.wired.com/geekdad/2011/01/the-5-best-toys-of-all-time/all/" target="_blank">5 Best Toys of All Time</a>. Could it be true? Did I just find the #4 best toy of all time under my desk? I mean, E has played with toilet paper tubes, paper towel tubes and even a wrapping paper tube, but this was taking it to a whole new level. How lucky is E?! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But then, I started thinking even more creatively. What about a rain stick? Surprisingly, it wasn't something I had pinned on Pinterest. It was something I had just seen in passing while surfing the interwebs. I actually had to re-search for it and find a site with a good how-to. <a href="http://mamascouts.blogspot.com/2012/11/make-mailing-tube-rain-stick.html" target="_blank">This one</a> from Mama Scout seemed the most like what I was looking for. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here's how mine went...</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My supplies included the coveted mailing tube, a crap ton of nails (I think I used a total of 80), something to make the noise-- I used beans and also (not pictured) rice, something to pretty it up (mine is fabric wrapped). </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPjWtR018ecv-AHqBJmLFUca_2SZQ7gdEeUJ_-YkXNEjJ8cZfco8ovxqC0pdrEqAKg9nyYV8t4m3ASXxp9bzfP4Q7kXq1MQLHaer7sHfriIVuHsUbPYauACcf-d8t3RQXuDQZZ40-gyaKt/s1600/IMGP2822.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPjWtR018ecv-AHqBJmLFUca_2SZQ7gdEeUJ_-YkXNEjJ8cZfco8ovxqC0pdrEqAKg9nyYV8t4m3ASXxp9bzfP4Q7kXq1MQLHaer7sHfriIVuHsUbPYauACcf-d8t3RQXuDQZZ40-gyaKt/s400/IMGP2822.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First, I hammered. And hammered and hammered. The cardboard mailing tube is perfect for the nail approach (verses some of the other approaches I've seen using tooth picks or skewers) because it's easy to hammer into, but quite sturdy. I made circles around the tube with nails, trying to stagger them as much as possible. I think I used 80 nails, and I could've used another box if I had it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5gj8ePQMcCIvnPzy18Du1Pums4_TrdReaM7s1xNwBVWNxcOtTCrD4s_R2G9Mp6AhvbaDoXsg6rC0pGo-qddKYxchJ40WTMSY6VUAvwTosg4EKPjSKF0F0vOF2e0hY4KCYdGH2i4ipd_JF/s1600/IMGP2823.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5gj8ePQMcCIvnPzy18Du1Pums4_TrdReaM7s1xNwBVWNxcOtTCrD4s_R2G9Mp6AhvbaDoXsg6rC0pGo-qddKYxchJ40WTMSY6VUAvwTosg4EKPjSKF0F0vOF2e0hY4KCYdGH2i4ipd_JF/s400/IMGP2823.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-2ZZKnTxf2VNuPpS4eeHXR6WhEgOIhmE0jh3Rvy5XYAVVhfDirWU_Jm7pzOGvLddGRE3Vf0eQr6eiRB3zL8z4OASiZpxnZNHiivlQSrkKrUBz5DTHC1nF6TSB4BAW_izeYGXdP8qRso23/s1600/IMGP2826.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-2ZZKnTxf2VNuPpS4eeHXR6WhEgOIhmE0jh3Rvy5XYAVVhfDirWU_Jm7pzOGvLddGRE3Vf0eQr6eiRB3zL8z4OASiZpxnZNHiivlQSrkKrUBz5DTHC1nF6TSB4BAW_izeYGXdP8qRso23/s400/IMGP2826.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This certainly does not look like a toddler toy, right? No worries, I took some safety precautions. I wrapped the whole tube in packing tape to keep the nails in place-- and add an extra layer of protection between the nails and E's curious fingers. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjz6RgzfVoBCNrPxus-i61pac6UUTrtoi4O9_FYbzsBqquWHKJCqtj-pTXfio9CBcodY-WpgqCYtyLiZJBAf5jao8hUHHdmD8brX-6evVxg8hkVjmOyjTLAdZk5-RhTILr25O3pwiqvOqLs/s1600/IMGP2827.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjz6RgzfVoBCNrPxus-i61pac6UUTrtoi4O9_FYbzsBqquWHKJCqtj-pTXfio9CBcodY-WpgqCYtyLiZJBAf5jao8hUHHdmD8brX-6evVxg8hkVjmOyjTLAdZk5-RhTILr25O3pwiqvOqLs/s400/IMGP2827.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next came the filler. I started with just beans but I needed a softer sound so I added some rice. It's really a trial and error kind of thing. You just need to test it out until you find the sound you like. I admit, I wish I had used more nails because I feel like my fillings fall a little too fast. I was just too dang excited to complete it to run out for another box of nails. It's sort of rain stick-y but it's really more like an oddly shaped maraca. Whatever. It makes noise and that's the #1 feature to an 18 month old. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then, I wrapped the whole thing in fabric, hot gluing as I went. I used three patterns cut into about 1 inch strips. The hot gluing was far more dangerous for Mama than the nails were. If I was inclined to commit a crime, Saturday would've been the day because I'm pretty sure I burned all my fingerprints off. Whoever allowed me to purchase a hot glue gun should be fired! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Sorry for that tangent but my fingers were hurtin'! I also hot glued the plastic end caps on with the fabric tucked underneath them. And, I added a little extra pretty by adding a few ribbons on each end an in the middle. Mr. S thinks it's a little girly. Maybe it is. Who cares? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Could a very curious, very determined kid tear this apart and gain access to 80 nails and around a cup of choking hazards (beans)? Yeah, probably, but he would need be unusually determined. E's not that curious, or that determined and certainly doesn't have that much patience. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here it is all prettied up. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
E likes it but he doesn't quite understand that he needs to flip it over to make it make the noise again. So he just holds it upright with the beans in the bottom and whines because it's not making noise. So, until he catches on, it really is a homemade toy fail. I mean, you definitely don't want to make toys that cause you and your kids extra frustration. Soon enough though, I know he'll get it and enjoy making all that noise! At least it'll be a peaceful rain-like noise... like meditating in the warm peaceful rain in Hawaii... like the soothing sounds of a baby's white noise machine... riiiiiight! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
